In Psalms one hundred sixteen the Psalmist said, “The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell got hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow”, and in chapter one hundred sixteen and verse four of Psalms the Psalmist said, “then called I upon the name of the LORD” where we read,
Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech you, deliver my soul.
The verse begins with the words, “Then called I upon the name of the LORD;” The Psalmist began with the words, “then called I” or “at that time, therefore, wherefore and on this account I, the Psalmist, cried out for help, uttered a loud sound, summoned and gave invite” “upon the name” which means “on the reputation, fame and glory” “of the LORD” or “belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. The Psalmist cried out to Jehovah God for help after experiencing the “sorrows of death compassing” him, the “pains of hell” getting hold of him and finding “trouble and sorrow”.
The verse continues, “O LORD, I beseech you, deliver my soul.”. The Psalmist added the words, “O LORD” or “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”, “I beseech you” which means “I, the Psalmist, pray, ask and beg you, Jehovah God”, “deliver my soul” or “save, rescue and liberate my, the Psalmist's, heart, mind, will, desires, living being and seat of emotions and passions”. The Psalmist prayed for Jehovah God to rescue and save his heart, mind and will.
When we consider the Psalmist's words in this verse, we learn what he did when he encounter “death, pains of hell, trouble and sorrow”. He called out to Jehovah God, and this serves as an example for us. God knows we will face “tribulation” in this life, (See John 16:33) but His Son Jesus provided a way to overcome those troubles by going to the cross and dying for our sins. When we humble ourselves, repent of our sins and receive Jesus as our “Lord and Savior”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be our greatest resource when we encounter the troubles, griefs and sorrows in this world.
Next time the Psalmist says, “gracious is the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
