The Calamity of a Foolish Son - Proverbs 19:13

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favor is as dew upon the grass”, and in chapter nineteen and verse thirteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “a foolish son is the calamity of his father” where we read,

A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

The verse begins, A foolish son is the calamity of his father:” Solomon began with the words, “a foolish son” or “a male offspring who is stupid, a dullard, simpleton and arrogant” “is the calamity” which means “exists as the chasm, engulfing ruin and destruction” “of his father” or “belonging to the foolish son's immediate progenitor and ancestor”. Solomon shared how a male offspring who is stupid and arrogant is the engulfing ruin and destruction of his “father”.

The verse continues, “and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.” Solomon added the words, “and the contentions” or “and the strife and brawling” “of a wife” which means “belonging to a female spouse” “are as continual dropping” or “exist similar and in likeness to a continuous dripping”. Solomon said the female spouse who is constantly fighting and filled with strife exist like a constant dripping.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon about two relationships that cause troubles and difficulties. The first is a stupid and arrogant “son” who causes his father engulfing ruin and destruction, and the second is a “wife” who continually causes strife and fighting. God wants no one to be like these family members, and because these are two among many sins people commit, God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us how to live as His witness before family members who are stupid, arrogant and continually causing trouble and strife.

Next time Solomon says, “house and riches are the inheritance of fathers”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
