Swearing, Lying, Killing, Stealing and Adultery - Hosea 4:2

In the book of Hosea, Hosea shared how Jehovah God said to the nation of Israel, “Hear the word of the LORD, you children of Israel: for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land”, and in chapter four and verse two of Hosea, Hosea shared about, “swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery” where we read,

By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery,

they break out, and blood touches blood.

The verse begins, “By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, ...” Hosea began with the words, “by swearing” or “through the means of adjuring and taking an oath”, “and lying” which means “and deception, disappointment, falsehood and dissembling”, “and killing” or “and premeditated slaying and murder”, “and stealing”which means “and carrying away by stealth and deception”, “and committing adultery” or “and breaking wedlock and perpetrating idolatrous worship and sexual immorality with the spouse of another ”. Hosea shared how Jehovah God continued His list of grievances with the nation of Israel as He included taking oaths, falsehood, premeditated murder, thievery and sexual immorality the with spouse of another person against them.

The verse goes on to say, “... they break out, and blood touches blood.” Hosea continued with the words, “they break out” or “they, the nation of Israel, breach, burst in pieces and violently scatter”, “and blood touches blood” which means “and bloodshed strikes, extends to and comes against bloodshed”. Hosea shared how Jehovah God saw violence everywhere and one murder after another happening within the nation of Israel.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Hosea about other “controversies” Jehovah God had with the nation of Israel. They made oaths, proclaimed falsehoods, took things that did not belong to them and were involved in sexual immorality with spouses that were not their own. In addition they were violent and riotous and murders were happening everywhere. No wonder Jehovah God was in a dispute with them. These sins and more are prevalent in our day as well, and for this reason Jehovah God sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cleanse us for all these evils and wrongs as well as any others that are part of our lives.

Next time Hosea says, “therefore shall the land mourn”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
