In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon began with the words, “The Song of Songs, which is Solomon's. Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for your love is better than wine”, and in chapter one and verse three of Song of Songs Solomon shared how the bride said,“your name is as ointments poured forth” where we read,
Because of the savor of your good ointments your name is as ointment poured forth,
therefore do the virgins love you.
The verse begins, “Because of the savor of your good ointments your name is as ointment poured forth, ...” Solomon began with the words, “because of the savor” or “since and on account that the fragrance, aroma and odor” “of your good ointments” which means “belonging to your, the groom's, pleasant, agreeable, excellent, rich and valuable oils, medicaments or unguents for anointing” “your name” or “your, the groom's, fame, reputation and glory” “is as ointment poured forth” which means “exists similar and in likeness to oil, medicament or unguent emptied and cast out”. Solomon shared how the bride considered the love of the groom to be “better than wine” on account that the fragrance and aroma of his pleasant medicaments of his fame, reputation and glory was emptied out.
The verse goes on to say, “... therefore do the virgins love you.” Solomon continued with the word, “therefore” or “wherefore, then, thus and on this account” “do the virgins” which means “the maids or young maidens of marriageable age or newly married” “love you” or “have affection and appetite for you, the groom”. Solomon shared how the bride knew the “good ointments” of the “groom” also caused the young marriageable and newly married maidens to have affection for him.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the bride began to explain the reason the groom was so attractive to her. The fragrance of his cologne or ointment was emitted and his great reputation caused the young maidens to be affectionate toward him. God wants us to see Him as attractive, and when we understand the value of His “scent, being and name”, we shall fall in love with Him. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and make Himself attractive to us so that others are attracted to Him as well.
Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, “draw me, we will run after you”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
