The Fig Tree Putting Forth Leaves - Song of Songs 2:13

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said, “the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land”, and in chapter two and verse thirteen of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said, the fig tree puts forth her green figs where we read,

The fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell.

Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

The verse begins, The fig tree puts forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Solomon began with the words, “the fig tree” or “the tree that bears fig fruit” “puts forth her green figs” which means “ripens her, the fig tree's, early and unripe fig fruit”, “and the vines” or “and the twining and bending vines” “with the tender grape”which means “in the company of the bud or blossom of the fruit known as grapes” “give a good smell” or “bestow, grant and apply a pleasant and agreeable scent, fragrance aroma and odor”. Solomon shared how the groom added how the tree bearing fig fruit and the twining vines in the company of the fruit of grapes were not only ripening, but also putting off a pleasant aroma.

The verse continues, Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. Solomon added the words, “arise, my love” or “arouse, rise, stand and get up my, the groom's, well-loved bride”, “my fair one” which means “my, the groom's, beautiful, comely and pleasant one”, “and come away” or “and depart, proceed and walk aside”. Solomon shared how the groom repeated his invitation for his well-loved bride to arise and depart with him.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon shared how the groom continued to give reasons why the timing was right for the bride to go away with him. The tree bearing ripening fig fruit, and the twining vines with the fruit of grapes were producing a lovely and pleasant odor, and this provided the reason for them to depart at this time. We shall see more of the groom's invitation in our next verse, however, for now, let us perceive this example of the way Jehovah God calls every person to believe and trust in His Son Jesus, who died on the cross for our sins, and receive His invitation to come away from the world and all it's attractions, and simply be with Him. God loves us, and when we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the best life according to His purposes and plans not only in this life, but also in Heaven to come.

Next time Solomon shares how the groom says, O my dove, that are in the clefts of the rock, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
