The Little Foxes - Song of Songs 2:15

In the book of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the groom said to the bride, “O my dove, that are in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see your countenance, let me hear your voice; for sweet is your voice, and your countenance is comely”, and in chapter two and verse fifteen of Song of Songs, Solomon shared how the bride's brothers said, take us the foxes, the little foxes where we read,

Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.

The verse begins, Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: Solomon began with the words, “take us the foxes” or “catch, grasp and seize all of the jackals or fox animals”, “the little foxes” which means “the small, insignificant and unimportant jackals or fox animals”, “that spoil the vines” or “which destroy, corrupt and ruin the quality and cultivated garden or orchard”. Solomon shared how the brothers of the bride gave instruction to seize the jackals or foxes and insignificant foxes that corrupt and destroy the garden vines.

The verse continues, for our vines have tender grapes. Solomon added the words, “for our vines” or “because, since and on account that our, the brother's, gardens or twining vines” “have tender grapes” which means “have grape blossoms or buds”. Solomon shared how the bride's brothers share how the twining vines in the garden have blossoms or buds upon them.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon included the brothers of the bride in this story as they called for the “foxes” and “little foxes” to be caught. They were known to destroy vineyards, and because their gardens of vines were replete with buds and blossoms, the “foxes” needed to be seized. “Little foxes spoil the vine” has become a phrase to describe how unattended to small details can ruin and destroy a whole matter, and this could have been the case with the bride and the groom. God wants to have a personal relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us wisdom to discern when small details are neglected and ignored which may bring us to ruin.

Next time Solomon shares how the bride says, my beloved is mine, and I am his, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
