In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God asked, “who has despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?”, and in chapter four and verse ten of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “no, my lord” where we read,
And he answered me and said, Know you not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.
The verse reads, “And he answered me and said, Know you not what these be?” Zechariah began with the words, “and he answered me and said” or “and he, the angel, began to speak and questioned me, Zechariah, and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “know you not” which means “are you, Zechariah, unaware and without knowledge as to”, “what these be”or “whatsoever these, the two olive trees and two olive branches, exist as? Zechariah shared how the angel responded to his question by asking him a question as to whether he was without knowledge as to what the two olive trees and two olive branches were.
The verse goes on to say, “And I said, No, my lord.” Zechariah continued with the words, “and I said” or “and I, Zechariah, uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “no, my lord” which means “not in any way, my, Zechariah's, firm and strong master”. Zechariah referred to the angel as his master as he responded that he did not know or understand in any way what the two olive trees and two branches were.
When we think through Zechariah's words in this verse, we learn how the angel questioned him as to whether he understood what the “two olive trees and two branches” meant. It was as though Zechariah should have known, but he didn't and confessed that he was unaware. Zechariah's humility and posture for learning were admirable, and we should take note of them. We don't know everything God is doing in our lives, but we can trust Him when we don't. We have the assurance that He gave His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so when we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and allow us to live with Him forever. Every other question, answered or unanswered, should fall under the understanding of His eternal work for us, and what we do not know or understand may be questioned as we yield to Him to respond to us or not according to His perfect plan and will.
Next time Zechariah shares how the angel says, “these are the two anointed ones”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
