Take Away the Filthy Garments - Zechariah 3:4

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel, and in chapter three and verse four of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how the angel said, “take away the filthy garments from him”where we read,

And he answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, and I will clothe you with change of raiment.

The verse reads, And he answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. Zechariah began with the words, “and he answered and spoke” or “and he, the angel, began to speak, responded and uttered, declared and proclaimed” “unto those that stood before him” which means “to the others who remained, endured and were present in front, in the face and of him, the angel”, “saying” or “uttering, declaring and proclaiming”, “take away” which means “pluck away, depose and remove” “the filthy garments from him” or “the excrementtitous and soiled raiment and vestures separate and apart from Joshua”. Zechariah shared how the angel who spoke to Him instructed the others in front of him to remove the soiled raiment from Joshua the high priest.

The verse continues, “And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from you, ... Zechariah added the words, “and unto him he said” or “and toward him, the high priest Joshua, the angel uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “behold, I have caused” which means “lo, look and consider, I, Jehovah God, have made” “your iniquity”or “your, the high priest Joshua's, perversities, depravities, evil and mischief” “to pass from you” which means “sweep by, traverse and vanish separate and apart from you, the high priest Joshua”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God told the high priest Joshua that He removed his perversity and evil from him.

Finally the verse says, “and I will clothe you with change of raiment.” Zechariah concluded this verse with the words, “and I will clothe you” or “and I, Jehovah God, shall array and ” “with change of raiment” which means “by the use of a changeable suit of apparel and clothing”. Zechariah ended this verse by sharing how Jehovah God said He would array the “high priest Joshua” with a changeable suit of raiment.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how the angel and Jehovah God involved themselves in the life of “Joshua” the high priest. Though “Joshua” was arrayed with “filthy garments”, God removed them from him and changed his raiment. In the same manner we are clothed with the “filthy garments” of the world which is sin, and God wants to remove our sin from us through His Son Jesus whom He sent into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and cleanse us from all the unrighteous “clothing” which we have worn throughout our lives. (See 1 John 1:9)

Next time Zechariah says, “let them set a far mitre upon his head”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
