What Are These? - Zechariah 6:4

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “I turned, and lifted up my eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass. In the first chariot were red horses; and in the second chariot black horses. And in the third chariot white horses; and in the fourth chariot grisled and bay horses, and in chapter six and verse four of Zechariah, Zechariah asked, “what are these, my lord?” where we read,

Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, What are these, my lord?

The verse reads, Then I answered and said unto the angel that talked with me, ... Zechariah began with the words, “then I answered” or “at that time I, Zechariah, began to speak and responded” “and said unto the angel which means “and uttered, declared, proclaimed and questioned the spiritual messenger or envoy” “that talked with me” or “who spoke, made declarations and proclamations to me, Zechariah”. Zechariah shared how he began to speak with the “angel”again, and asked him the following question.

The verse goes on to say, “... What are these, my lord? Zechariah continued with the words, “what are these” or “whatsoever are these chariots with four different colored horses”, “my lord” which means “my, Zechariah's, master”? Zechariah shared how he again asked the “angel” who was speaking to him “what” the carriages with the different colored horses were.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how he was without understanding concerning these chariots and horses that were in his vision. We have to admire him for not just assuming what they were because he simply asked. Thus far he was allowed to know what each aspect to this vision was, and there was no reason to believe it would be any different this time. God had a plan for Israel, and He has a plan for us as well. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to be crucified on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and assure us that He is working in our lives not only in our physical world, but also in the spiritual world to accomplish His purposes and plans.

Next time Zechariah shares how the angel answered, “these are the four spirits of the heavens”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
