What Do You See? - Zechariah 5:2

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “then I turned, and lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll, and in chapter five and verse two of Zechariah, Zechariah shares how the angel asked him, “what do you see?” where we read,

And he said unto me, What do you see? And I answered, I see a flying roll;

the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

The verse reads, And he said unto me, What do you see? And I answered, I see a flying roll; Zechariah began with the words, “and he said unto me” or “and he, the angel, uttered, declared, proclaimed and questioned me, Zechariah”, “what do you see” which means “whatsoever is it that you, Zechariah, discern, distinguish, perceive and observe”? “And I answered” or “and I, Zechariah, began to speak and responded”, “I see a flying roll” which means “I, Zechariah, perceive and observe a book, writing or scroll hovering to and fro”. Zechariah shared how the angel questioned him as to what he observed, and he responded that he observed a scroll with writing hovering to and fro over the world.

The verse goes on to say, “the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. Zechariah continued with the words, “the length thereof” or “the physical measurement of how long the flying scroll” “is twenty cubits”which means “exists as twenty measures of distance of the forearm which is approximately eighteen inches”, “and the breadth thereof” or “and the width of the flying scroll” “ten cubits” which means “ten measures of distance of the forearm or eighteen inches”. Zechariah shared how the “flying” scroll was twenty eighteen inch measurements by ten eighteen inch measurements.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how he observed the “flying roll” or scroll, and he was aware that it was rectangular shaped and it's “length” was twice as long as it's width which was approximately thirty feet long by fifteen feet wide. We shall see what the significance of this vision of a “flying roll” was in our next verses, but for now let us be reminded that God knew exactly what He was doing, and each part of this vision of Zechariah had meaning for Him working in the lives of the people of Israel. God's word is for everyone, and He provided salvation from our sins through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for us. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us an understanding that He has all things in His control even when it's a “flying roll”.

Next time Zechariah shares how the angel says, “This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
