In the book of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of the province that went up out of the captivity” which included those who came with Zerubabbel, Parosh, Shephatiah and Arah”,and in chapter two and verse six of Ezra, Ezra shared about “the children of Pahathmoab, Jeshua and Joab” where we read,
The children of Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab,
two thousand eight hundred and twelve.
The verse reads, “The children of Pahathmoab, of the children of Jeshua and Joab,, ...” Ezra began with the words, “the children of Pahathmoab” which means “the offspring and progeny belonging to Pahathmoab whose name means pit of Moab and was ancestor of one or two families of Israel who returned from exile in Babylon and a leader of the people, father of the wall rebuilder Hashub, and one who signed the covenant with Nehemiah”, “the children of Jeshua” or “the offspring and progeny belonging to Jeshua whose name means he is saved and was the head of a Levitical house which returned from captivity in Babylon and the father of a builder of the wall of Jerusalem in the time of Nehemiah” “and Joab” which means “Jehovah is father” . Ezra included the offspring of “Pahathmoab, Jeshua and Joab” in the list of families that were returning to Jerusalem after being exiled in Babylon for seventy years.
The verse continues, “... two thousand eight hundred and twelve.” Ezra added the words, “two thousand eight hundred and twelve.” or “there were twenty eight hundred and twelve” offspring of “Pahathmoab, Jeshua and Joab” who returned to Jerusalem”. Ezra included families who returned to Jerusalem and were involved in rebuilding the wall around the city under “Nehemiah” when they began to live there. (See Nehemiah 7:11)
When we meditate upon Ezra's words in this verse, we learn about three more names of people whose offspring returned to Jerusalem. “Pahathmoab and Jeshua” were mentioned who were a part of rebuilding the wall around “Jerusalem”, and we shall learn more about that in the book of “Nehemiah”. For now let us consider that God called these people back to their homeland, and they were to be used in the rebuilding of the city when the arrived. In other words, they were used in the “kingdom”. God desires to save every person from the penalty of sin which is death, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. (See Romans 3:23, 6:23; John 3:16) When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and use us in His Kingdom to accomplish His will and purpose for us in this world.
Next time Ezra shares about, “the children of Elam”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
