In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, ...”, and in chapter seven and verse two of Ezra, Ezra continued to share his lineage with the words, “the son of Shallum, Zadok and Ahitub” where we read,
The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok,
the son of Ahitub ...
The verse reads, “The son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, ...” Ezra began with the words, “the son of Shallum” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Shallum whose name means retribution and was a priest”, “the son of Zadok” which means “the offspring and progeny of Zadok whose name means righteous and was a also a priest”. Ezra shared his “priestly” lineage as he descended from “Shallum and Zadok”.
The verse continues, “ … the son of Ahitub ...” Ezra added the words, “the son” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Ahitub” or “belonging to Ahitub whose name means my brother is goodness”. Ezra shared how he also descended from “Ahitub” in his priestly heritage.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Ezra more about his lineage. He came from a priestly background as his great great grandfather was “Shallum” who was a priest, and his great, great, great grandfather was “Zadok” who was also a priest. His great, great, great, great grandfather was “Ahitub” or “Achitub” which was the name of several priests. God had a plan for “Ezra”, and He used him to compile the scriptures as well as being instrumental in his time period for reestablishing the temple worship of Jehovah God. God loves people, and He employs people like “Ezra” to bring others into a personal relationship with Him. God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us to understand the heritage that He has given to us will be used in His Kingdom when we yield our lives to Him.
Next time Ezra continues to share his lineage with the words, “the son of Amariah, Azariah and Meraioth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
