In the book of Ezra, Ezra said, “Now after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, the son of Shallum, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Meraioth, ...”, and in chapter seven and verse four of Ezra, Ezra continued to share his lineage with the words, “the son of Zerahiah, Uzzi and Bukki” where we read,
The son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki
The verse reads, “The son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, ...” Ezra began with the words, “the son of Zerahiah” which means “the offspring and progeny belonging to Zerahiah whose name means Jehovah has risen and was a priest”, “the son of Uzzi” which means “the offspring and progeny belonging to Uzzi whose name means strong and was in the line of priests although apparently never high priest himself”. Ezra also descended from “Zerahiah and Uzzi” whose names mean “Jehovah has risen and strong”.
The verse goes on to say, “ … the son of Bukki, ...” Ezra continued with the words, “the son” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Bukki” or “belonging to Bukki whose name means wasting and was in the line of the high priests”. Ezra included “Bukki” as one of the men from whom he descended and whose name means “wasting”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Ezra how his lineage included “Zerahiah, Uzzi and Bukki” who have names that mean “Jehovah has risen, strong and wasting”. God's Son Jesus rose from the dead three days after He died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and because of this, when we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help us not to “waste” our lives but to be used by the risen King of Kings to be strong in the world as a witness to the power of God to change the lives of people.
Next time Ezra continues to share his lineage with the words, “the son of Abishua, Phinehas, Eleazar and Aaron the chief priest”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
