In the book of Ezra, Ezra began to name the male offspring of the children of Israel who put away their strange wives by listing, “the sons of Immer; Harim and Pashur; Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethaneel, Jozabad, and Elasah; Also of the Levites; Jozabad, and Shimei, and Kelaiah, (the same is Kelita,) Pethahiah, Judah, and Eliezer; Of the singers also; Eliashib: and of the porters; Moreover of Israel: of the sons of Parosh; and of the sons of Elam; and of the sons of Zattu; of the sons also of Bebai; the sons of Bani; the sons of Pahathmoab; the sons of Harim; the sons of Hashum; the sons of Bani” and “Shelemiah and Nathan, and Adaiah” and in chapter ten and verse forty-one of Ezra, Ezra added “Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah”, where we read,
Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah
The verse reads, “Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah”. Ezra began with the word, “Azareel” or “God has helped”,“and Shelemiah” which means “repaid by Jehovah”, “Shemariah” or “kept by Jehovah”. Ezra said three men whose names mean, “God has helped, repaid by Jehovah and kept by Jehovah” were included in the list of the men of Israel who married foreign wives and separated from them when he told them to do so.
When we consider Ezra's words in this verse, we discover more of the names of the men of Israel who married foreign wives and subsequently put them away after being commanded by God through Ezra to take action. God's love and protection for Israel was evident, and because He desires a pure people, He will call every person into a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins. When we yield to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us how to value every person in the world.
Next time Ezra includes, “Shallum, Amariah, and Joseph”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
