In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah was given an assignment by God to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after being held captive in Babylon for seventy years, and in chapter one and verse one of Nehemiah, Nehemiah began by proclaiming, “the words of Nehemiah” , where we read,
The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachallah,
and it came to pass in the month of Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace.
The verse reads, “The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachallah,”. Nehemiah began with the words, “the words of Nehemiah” or “the speeches, utterances and declarations belonging to Nehemiah whose name means Jehovah comforts” “the son of Hachallah” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Hachallah whose name means whom Jehovah enlightens”. Nehemiah shared how the following were his utterances and that he was the male offspring of“Hachallah” whose name means Jehovah enlightens.
The verse continues, “and it came to pass in the month of Chisleu, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the palace.” Nehemiah added the words, “and it came to pass” or “and the following happened and occurred” “in the month of Chisleu” which means “within the lunar moon or month pertaining to Chisleu which means his confidence and was the ninth month of the calendar which corresponds to November - December” “in the twentieth year” or “within the twentieth annual division or measure of time”, “as I was in Shushan” which means “while I, Nehemiah, existed within Shushan whose name means lily and was the winter residence of the Persian kings; located on the river Ulai or Choaspes” “the palace” or “the castle or home”. Nehemiah shared how the event he will tell about occurred within the lunar month of “Chisleu” or November-December within the twentieth annual measure of time during the time he was within the castle home in “Shushan”.
When we meditate upon Nehemiah's words in this verse, we learn about his name, his heritage and the timing of the month “Chisleu” within the twentieth year while he was within the winter residence in “Shushan”. We shall see how all these factors are involved in Nehemiah's part in this story, but for now, let us remember that God is using these people and timing for His perfect will to be accomplished. God loves the people of Israel, and He was going to reestablish them within the city of Jerusalem after being captives in Babylon for seventy years. God loves us as well, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and establish us with a willingness to be used by Him to accomplish His and perfect plan for our lives.
Next time Nehemiah says, “Hanani … came and certain men of Judah” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
