In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. He used, “Eliashib and his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. And next unto him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri. But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana. And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord. Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, unto the throne of the governor on this side the river”, and in chapter three and verse eight of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “next unto him repaired Uzziel”, where we read,
Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall.
The verse reads, “Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “next unto him” or “beside and in close proximity to him, Jadon” “repaired Uzziel” which means “strengthened, hardened and made firm Uzziel whose name means my strength is God” “the son of Harhaiah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Harhaiah whose name means fear of Jehovah”, “of the goldsmiths” whose name means “pertaining to the smelters, refiners and testers of gold metal”. Nehemiah shared how “Uzziel” who belonged to the artisans in gold worked in proximity to Jadon.
The verse continues, “Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall.” Nehemiah added the words, “next unto him” or “beside and in close proximity to him, Uzziel” “also repaired Hananiah” which means “even so and indeed strengthened, hardened and made firm Hananiah whose name means God has favored” “the son of one of the apothecaries” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to a certain or particular person belonging to the ointment-makers or perfumers”, “and they fortified Jerusalem” which means “and they, Hananiah and Uzziel, restored and repaired Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split” “unto the broad wall” or “to the large and wide barrier wall”. Nehemiah said “Hananiah” worked on the barrier wall beside “Uzziel” who was among the ointment-makers, and they worked together on the “large and wide wall”.
When we consider Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how “Uzziel and Hananiah”, who were craftsmen in gold and ointments, worked beside one another on the “broad wall”. This section of the wall was torn down, and now they would restore it. God's plan to restore and rebuild Jerusalem was coming together, and person by person and group by group each of these were working together to accomplish his purpose for the wall of Jerusalem. God wants a relationship with every person through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of the world, and when He was resurrected from the dead three days later, He made the way for every person who believes and trusts in Him to be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and employed in His Kingdom according to His perfect will and plan for their lives.
Next time Nehemiah says, “next unto him repaired Rephaiah”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
