In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city.” Nehemiah included the children of many of the people of Israel in his census, and he added several of the men such as “the men of the other Nebo, the other Elam” and “the children of Harim, Jericho, Lod, Hadid, Ono and Senaah.” He also counted, “the priests, the Levites: the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, and the children of Hodevah seventy and four” and “the singers, the porters” and “the Nethinims: the children of Ziha, Hashupha, Tabbaoth, Keros, Sia and Padon, Lebana, Hagaba, Shalmai, Hanan, Giddel, Gahar, Reaiah, Rezin and Nekoda, Gazzam, Uzza and Phaseah ...”, and in chapter seven and verse fifty-two of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Besai, Meunim and Nephishesim”, where we read,
The Children of Besai, the children of Meunim, the children of Nephishesim,
The verse reads, “The children of Besai, the children of Meunim, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, “the children”which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Besai” or “belonging to Besai whose name means my treading”, “the children” which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Meunim” or “belonging to Meunim whose name means habitations”. Nehemiah shared how the offspring belonging to “Besai and Meunim” were included in his list of “Nethinims” who returned to Jerusalem and served the Levites and priests in the temple.
The verse continues, “... the children of Nephishesim, ...” Nehemiah added the words, “the children” or “the progeny or offspring” “of Nephishesim” which means “belonging to Nephishesim whose name means scattered spices”. Nehemiah added the progeny belonging to “Nephishesim” to his census of the “Nethinims” who were to serve in the temple.
When we consider Nehemiah's words in this verse, we discover how there were offspring of “Besai, Meunim and Nephishesim” who were added to the list of “Nethinims” within Israel who returned to Jerusalem after being held captive in Babylon for seventy years. God was moving His people back to their homeland and positions of worship, and these servants to the Levites and priests were accounted for among those He inspired. God wants all of us to be a part of His Kingdom, and when we believe and trust in His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross for the sins of the world and resurrected from the grave three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us positions of service in His Kingdom according to His Divine purpose and will.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “the children of Bakbuk, Hakupha and Harhur”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
