The Children of Harim - Nehemiah 7:42

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city.” Nehemiah included the children of many of the people of Israel in his census, and he added several of the men such as “the men of the other Nebo, the other Elam” and “the children of Harim, Jericho, Lod, Hadid, Ono and Senaah.” He also counted, “the priests: the children of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred seventy and three”, and “the children of Immer and Pashur”, and in chapter seven and verse forty-two of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “the children of Harim”, where we read,

The children of Harim, a thousand and seventeen.

The verse reads, The children of Harim, ...” Nehemiah began with the words, the children which means “the offspring and progeny” “of Harim” or “belonging to Harim whose name means dedicated”. Nehemiah shared how the progeny belonging to “Harim” or “dedicated” were accounted for among the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem and Judah from being captives in Babylon to the completing of the barrier wall.

The verse goes on to say, “... a thousand and seventeen.” Nehemiah added the words, “a thousand” or “one thousand offspring” “and seventeen” which means “and seventeen more”. Nehemiah said there were one thousand and seventeen offspring of “Harim” who were counted in his census.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about the offspring of “Harim” who were accounted for in his tabulation of the people of Israel who returned to Jerusalem and Judah to the finishing of the barrier wall. The name “Harim” means “dedicated”, and God is dedicated to us through His Son Jesus who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. God raised Jesus from the dead three days later, and now all who put their faith and trust in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will be forgiven of their sins, granted everlasting life and shown the “dedication” God has toward us and wants us to have toward Him.

Next time Nehemiah shares about, “The Levites: the children of Jeshua”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
