Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah - Nehemiah 12:7

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, these are the priests and the Levites that went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra, Amariah, Malluch, Hattush, Shechaniah, Rehum, Meremoth. Iddo, Ginnetho, Abijah, Miamin, Maadiah, Bilgah, Shemaiah, Joiarib and Jedaiah ...”, and in chapter twelve and verse seven of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah” where we read,

Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, Jedaiah.

These were the chief of the priests and of their brethren in the days of Jeshua.

The verse reads, Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah, Jedaiah. Nehemiah began with the word, “Sallu” or Salu or Sallai whose name means “weighed”, “Amok” or “to be deep”, “Hilkiah” whose name means “my portion is Jehovah”, “Jedaiah” or “Jehovah has known”. Nehemiah shared how Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah” were among the “priests and Levites”who returned from captivity with Zerubbabel.

The verse goes on to say, “These were the chief of the priests and of their brethren in the days of Jeshua.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “these were the chief” or ““Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah were the heads, chieftains and choice” “of the priests” which means “belonging to the spiritual leaders and spokesmen” “and of their brethren” or “and belonging to their, the priests', fellow kinsmen, kindred and relatives” “in the days of Jeshua” which means “within the time period and season pertaining to Jeshua whose name means he is saved”. Nehemiah shared how “Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah” were the heads of the spiritual leaders and their fellow kinsmen within the time period that “Jeshua” was over them.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah that there were overseers to the “priests and Levites” who returned from exile with Zerubbabel. “Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah” who were chieftains during the time of “Jeshua” were included in Nehemiah's list. God is a God of order, and He places people in positions of authority for His purposes and plans. When we receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put His Holy Spirit within us to guide us to all truth and to empower us to live according to that truth in whatever position He places us in the world.

Next time Nehemiah shares more about, “the Levites”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
