Achan Says I Have Sinned - Joshua 7:20

In the book of Joshua, we learned how, “Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. And Joshua said unto Achan, My son, give, I pray you, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what you have done; hide it not from me”, and in chapter seven and verse twenty of the book of Joshua, we learn how, “Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD”, where we read,

And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done:

The verse reads, “And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, …” Joshua or the writer began with the words, “and Achan answered Joshua” which means “and Achan whose name means troubler responded to Joshua whose name means Jehovah is salvation”, “and said” or “and uttered, declared and proclaimed”, “Indeed I have sinned” which means “even so have I, Achan, erred, missed the mark and done wrong” “against the LORD” or “in opposition to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “God of Israel” which means “the Supreme Deity belonging to Israel whose name means God prevails and is the name of the descendants and the nation of the descendants of Jacob”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Achan” responded to “Joshua” by declaring that he missed the mark and did wrong in opposition to Jehovah God who is the Supreme Deity “of Israel”

The verse goes on to say, … and thus and thus have I done: Joshua or the writer continued with the words, “and thus and thus” which means “and the following exists as what” “have I done” or “I, Achan, fashioned and performed”. Joshua or the writer shared how “Achan” declared the following to be what he did.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn how to ”Achan” began to respond to “Joshua’s” inquiry of him by acknowledging his error and wrong before Jehovah God who is the Supreme Deity “of Israel”, and he will continue his confession in our next verse. For now let us consider that “Achan” knew who he sinned against, and he was prepared to share his wrong. John the apostle wrote about God, “if we confess our sins, He is faithful to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (See 1 John 1:9) God wants us to “confess” our sins, and our sins are truly against Him. When He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the grave after three days, He made the way through faith and belief in Him as our “Savior and Lord” to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will reveal our sin so we may acknowledge Him and that which we have done wrong.

Next time we learn how Achan says, “when I saw among the spoils”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
