Jesus Opens His Disciples' Understanding Luke 24:45

The beloved physician Luke shared how Jesus revealed Himself to the two disciples who traveled with Him to Emmaus, and afterward they “rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread. And as they thus spoke, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are you troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit has not flesh and bones, as you see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he showed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have you here any meat And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took it, and did eat before them. And he said unto them, These are the words which I spoke unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me”, and in chapter twenty-four and verse forty-five of his book Luke shared how Jesus, “opened he their understanding” where we read:

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

The verse reads, “Then opened he their understanding, ... Luke began with the words, “then opened he or “at that time Jesus expounded, caused and roused” “their understanding” which means “the reasoning, capacity for spiritual truth, the higher power of the soul and the perceiving of divine things within His disciples' and the people with them”. Luke shared how Jesus “roused” the “capacity for spiritual truth” within His disciples and the people with them.

The verse goes on to say, “... that they might understand the scriptures.” Luke continued with the words, “that they might understand” which means “so Jesus' disciples and the people with them could perceive, set, join together and comprehend” “the scriptures” or “the document known as the Holy Writ”. Luke shared how Jesus “exposed” the “spiritual comprehension” of Jesus' disciples and the people with them toward the “Holy Scriptures” concerning Himself.

When we consider Luke's words in this verse, we discover how Jesus' disciples and the people with them finally understood what was happening. To “understand” the “Holy Scriptures” concerning the Messiah, Jesus needed to “open” their “minds and souls” concerning them. God wants every person to understand His love and commitment to them through His Son Jesus Christ. Jesus came into the world to die for the sins of all mankind, and He rose from the dead to prove He was able to defeat the penalty for sins which is death. Those who examine the “scriptures” and ask the Lord to “open their understanding” toward them shall not only learn of God's great plan of redemption, but should be convinced to yield their hearts and lives to Him.

Next time Luke shares how Jesus, “thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
