After writing about Jesus being in the beginning with God and was God, creating the world, being the light that shines in darkness, John the apostle wrote, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John”, and in chapter one and verse seven of his book, John shared how this John,“came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light” where we read:
The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
The verse reads, “The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, ...” John began with the words, “the same” or “the selfsame man John” “came for a witness” which means “arose, appeared, was established and became known as one who gives record, report, testimony or evidence”, “to bear witness” or “to affirm, give testimony, conjure and implore an honorable report” “of the Light” which means “pertaining to the truth, knowledge and spiritual purity within the Word which was Jesus”. John shared how “John the Baptist” appeared to “give testimony” concerning the “Light” which was Jesus.
The verse goes on to say, “... that all men through him might believe.” John continued with the words, “that all men” which means “so each, every, the whole and everyone of mankind both male and female” “through him” or “by way and means of the Light, Jesus” “might believe” which means “could think to be true, be persuaded and have confidence in a moral or religious reference to the Light which is Jesus”. John shared how John the Baptist bore “witness” of Jesus so everyone who heard his words would “believe” in Him.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we learn how “John the Baptist” appeared on the earth as a “man sent from God” who would “testify” of the validity of Jesus. Because “John the Baptist” bore “witness”, God's desire for every person to “believe” in Jesus was revealed. Those who “trust in, rely upon and cling to” Jesus will be saved from their sins and receive everlasting life with God. God the Father was intentional in His plan to redeem mankind, and He sent both His Son Jesus and Jesus' forerunner “John the Baptist” to fulfill His will. Let all who consider these things yield their life to Jesus Christ who alone is able to provide salvation.
Next time John shares how John, “was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
