John the apostle wrote, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men”, and in chapter one and verse five of his book, John shared how, “the light shines in darkness” where we read:
And the light shines in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
The verse reads, “And the light shines in darkness;” John began with the words, “and the light shines” or “and the truth and its knowledge together with the spiritual purity associated with it toward human beings whether male or female becomes evident, comes into view and appears” “in darkness” which means “within that which is in want of light and is a metaphor used of ignorance of divine things and is associated with wickedness and the resultant misery in hell”. John shared how the “light” or “truth, knowledge and spiritual purity” of God became evident within the “dark and wicked” world that “results in misery in hell”.
The verse goes on to say, “and the darkness comprehended it not.” John continued with the words, “and the darkness” which means “and that which is in want of light and is a metaphor used of ignorance of divine things and is associated with wickedness and the resultant misery in hell” “comprehended it not” or “did not lay hold of, possess, obtain or attain the light”. John shared how the world that was in “darkness” did not “lay hold or or possess” the “truth, knowledge and spiritual purity” of “the Word”.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we discover how God sent His Son Jesus, “the Word” into the world which was “ignorant” of “truth, knowledge and spiritual purity”, however, the “world” or the people in the world, did not “lay hold of or attain” that “light”. In other words, the “light of the world”, Jesus as God, was among mankind, and they did not understand or receive Him. God desires a personal relationship with every person, and when they receive Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive their sins and provide them with “everlasting life”. This is the “truth, knowledge and spiritual purity” that was sent by God through His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will allow the “light” of Jesus into their lives and drive all “darkness” away.
Next time John shares about, “a man named John”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
