John the apostle wrote concerning Jesus, “Now after two days he departed from there, and went into Galilee. For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet has no honor in his own country. Then when he was come into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all the things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast: for they also went unto the feast. So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judaea into Galilee, he went unto him, and besought him that he would come down, and heal his son: for he was at the point of death. Then said Jesus unto him, Except you see signs and wonders, you will not believe”, and in chapter four and verse forty-nine of his book, John shared how the nobleman said to Jesus, “Sir, come down before my child dies” where we read:
The nobleman said unto him, Sir, come down before my child dies.
The verse reads, “The nobleman said unto him, ...”. John began with the words, “the nobleman” or “the particular regal, royal and officer or minister of a prince such as a courtier” “said unto him” which means “uttered, declared and proclaimed to Jesus”. John shared how the “nobleman” responded to Jesus with the following words.
The verse continues, “... Sir, come down before my child dies.” John added the word, “Sir” which means “One to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master and the title given to God the Messiah”, “come down before my child dies” or “descend to my dwelling place in advance of the nobleman's son perishes”. John shared how the nobleman continued to beg Jesus to come to his home in advance of his son dying.
When we meditate upon John's words in this verse, we learn how Jesus' statement about not believing unless he saw a miracle did not deter this nobleman at all. He was desperate, and he believed Jesus could help his son who was very near death. God allows some circumstances to appear within a person's life so they will call out in desperation to Him. He has made a way to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus, and anyone who believes and trusts in Him as their “Savior and Lord” will find Him present in their adversities. Let all who read these words submit to Jesus whether they have a desperate situation or are coming into one.
Next time John shares how Jesus says to the nobleman, “Go your way; your son lives”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
