John the apostle wrote how Jesus met a “Samaritan woman” at a well located near the Samaritan city of Sychar. As they conversed the woman said, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain; and you say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman said unto him, I know that Messiah comes, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus said unto her, I that speak unto you am he. And upon this came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What do you seek? or, Why are you talking with her? The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that you know not of”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-three of his book, John shared how Jesus' disciples asked, “has any man brought him anything to eat?” where we read:
Therefore said the disciples one to another, Has any man brought him anything to eat?
The verse reads, “Therefore said the disciples one to another, ...” John began with the words, “Therefore said the disciples” or “then, wherefore, these things being so and consequently uttered, declared, proclaimed and asked Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “one to another” which means “one disciple to another disciple”. John shared how Jesus' disciples began to question each other with the following words after Jesus said He had “meat” that they “knew not of”.
The verse continues, “... Has any man brought him anything to eat?”. John added the words, “has any man” which means “has any person whether male or female” “brought him anything” or “carried to Jesus any food or nourishment” “to eat” which means “to consume and devour”? John shared how Jesus' disciples wondered if “any other person” “brought” Jesus something to “eat”.
When we think through John's words in this verse, we see how Jesus' disciples still did not understand that Jesus was speaking to them about “spiritual” matters and not physical ones. They thought perhaps someone else provided Jesus with some food while they were away, but Jesus was not speaking to them about “physical” food. God knows people need “physical” nourishment, however, the “physical body” will hunger and thirst again. The “soul” of a person can be satisfied when they submit their lives to Jesus as their personal “Lord and Savior”. The “salvation” of God is eternal, and those who are wise will seek the Lord Jesus for His “spiritual food” that provides forgiveness of sins and everlasting life with His Father God.
Next time John shares how Jesus said to His disciples, “my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
