John the apostle wrote how Jesus met a “Samaritan woman” at a well located near a Samaritan city named Sychar. As they conversed the woman said, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain; and you say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman said unto him, I know that Messiah comes, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus said unto her, I that speak unto you am he. And upon this came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What do you seek? or, Why are you talking with her? The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-one of his book, John shared how Jesus', “disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat” where we read:
In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.
The verse reads, “In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, ...” John began with the words, “In the mean while” or “and between the time the men of the city were coming to Jesus” “his disciples” which means “Jesus' students, pupils and attendants” “prayed him” or “requested of, entreated, begged and beseeched Jesus”, “saying” which means “uttering, declaring and proclaiming” the following words. John shared how Jesus' disciples “entreated and begged” Jesus with the following words.
The verse continues, “... Master, eat.”. John added the word, “Master” which means “teacher and instructor” “eat” or “consume and devour”. John shared how Jesus' “disciples” desired that Jesus “eat” some food.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we realize Jesus' “disciples” had now obtained “physical” food, and because they believed Jesus needed “nourishment”, they wanted Him to partake. Jesus will respond to them in our next verse, but let it suffice us for now to understand Jesus was thinking differently than His “disciples”. Spiritual things matter to God because they are “everlasting”, and He desires to have a personal relationship with every person. He sent His Son Jesus to “satisfy” their “spiritual” need of “salvation”. God is “eternally minded”, and though physical food temporarily satisfies the physical body, His “spiritual” food nourishes the “everlasting soul”. Those who are wise will seek the “spiritual” food from Jesus by submitting their lives to Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Next time John shares how Jesus says “I have meat to eat that you know not of”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
