John the apostle wrote how Jesus met a “Samaritan woman” at a well located near the Samaritan city named Sychar. As they conversed the woman said, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain; and you say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes, when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman said unto him, I know that Messiah comes, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus said unto her, I that speak unto you am he. And upon this came his disciples, and marveled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What do you seek? or, Why are you talking with her? The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and said to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ? Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that you know not of. Therefore said the disciples one to another, Has any man brought him anything to eat?”, and in chapter four and verse thirty-four of his book, John shared how Jesus said, “my meat is to do the will of him that sent me” where we read:
Jesus said unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
The verse reads, “Jesus said unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, ...” John began with the words, “Jesus said unto them” or “the Son of God, the Savior of mankind and God incarnate whose name means Jehovah is Salvation uttered, declared and proclaimed to His disciples”, “My meat” which means “my, Jesus', food or victuals” “is to do the will of him” or “exists as the performance, ordaining and rendering of the desire, purpose, inclination and pleasure belonging to him, God the Father” “that sent me” which means “who dispatched and assigned me, Jesus”. John shared how Jesus told His “disciples” that His “food or nourishment” was to perform the “purpose and pleasure” of His Father God who dispatched Him.
The verse goes on to say, “... and to finish his work.”. John continued with the words, “and to finish” which means “and to perfect, complete, consecrate, fulfill and finalize” “his work” or “God the Father's business, employment, acts, deeds, labor and industry”. John shared how Jesus added that He was to “complete and finalize” the “acts and deeds” of His Father God.
When we consider John's words in this verse, we learn what “satisfied” the soul of Jesus. Though “physical food” was needed for the body, Jesus elevated the “nourishment” of His “Spirit” as more important and fulfilling. “Doing” the “will of God” superseded any desire to have Jesus' “fleshly body” satisfied, and because Jesus was purposed and driven to fulfill His Father's “will”, He had “meat” of which His “disciples” were unaware. God desires to provide “satisfaction to the soul” to every person who will believe and trust in His Son Jesus, and those who are wise will not only submit to Him for forgiveness, salvation and eternal life, but will also seek to “finish his work” to which they have been assigned.
Next time John shares how Jesus asks His disciples, “So you not say there are yet four months, and then comes harvest?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
