LORD, Why Do You Stand Afar Off? - Psalms 10:1

Psalms chapter ten begins with David asking, “Why stand you afar off, O LORD?” where we read,

Why stand you afar off, O LORD? why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?

The verse begins, Why do you stand afar off, O LORD?” David began with the words, “why do you stand” which means “for what reason and cause do you, Jehovah God”, remain, stay and continue delaying and persist in being stationed, set and established” “afar off” or “at a distance and remote”, “O LORD” which means “O Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. David asked Jehovah God for the reason that He was distant and established remotely from him.

The verse goes on to say,why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?David continued with the words, “why do you hide yourself” or “for what reason and cause do you, Jehovah God, conceal and make secret your own self” “in times of trouble” which means “in experiences, fortunes, occurrences and occasions that are distressing, vexing and adverse”? David wondered “why” Jehovah God was in secret when distressing and adverse events came into his life.

When we think through the words in this verse, we may be able to identify with David's question. We wonder, “where are you God?, and why does it seem like you are hiding from me?” God knows our circumstances, and He is very present in our time of need. He tests our faith as we learn to rely upon Him even when it appears that He is no where to be found. Hebrews chapter eleven and verse six says, “without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that comes to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” Faith, without seeing, is how a person receives God's Son Jesus as their personal “Savior and Lord”, and when they believe and trust in Him, He will forgive their sins, grant them eternal life and care for them in ways they do not always perceive. God loves us, and He is present even when we wonder where He is. Let us give praise and honor to our “omnipresent” God at all times even when troubles arise.

Next time David says, “the wicked in his pride does persecute the poor:”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
