In Psalms chapter thirty David said, “LORD, by your favor you have made my mountain to stand strong: you did hide your face, and I was troubled. I cried to you, O LORD; and unto the LORD I made supplication”, and in chapter thirty and verse nine of Psalms David asked Jehovah God, “What profit is there in my blood?”, where we read,
What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit?
Shall the dust praise you? shall it declare your truth?
The verse begins, “What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit?” David began with the words, “What profit” which means “what gain, lucre or plunder” “is there in my blood” or “exists within my, David's, bloodshed”, “when I go down” which means “at the time and moment I, David, descend, decline and sink down” “to the pit” or “to corruption, the ditch and the grave”? David asked Jehovah God what gain or benefit existed at the time he descended into the grave.
The verse goes on to say, “Shall the dust praise you? shall it declare your truth?” David continued with the words, “Shall the dust” or “will the dry earth powder, debris, mortar or ore” “praise you” which means “give thanks, laud and revere you, Jehovah God”? “Shall it declare” or “will David's death utter and proclaim” “your truth” which means “your, Jehovah God's, firmness, faithfulness, sureness, reliability, stability and continuance”? David questioned Jehovah God as to whether the “dust” from which he was made would give honor and glory to Him, or would his death be able to proclaim His faithfulness and reliability.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn that David began to wonder what benefit there would be if he was dead and buried. He could not reason whether he would be able to give thanks and honor God if he were turned to “dust”, and how would he proclaim God's sureness and faithfulness if he were dead. It is true that the “dead” physical body of a person cannot give God “praise” nor proclaim His “truth”, however, we have a spiritual body that continues forever. We are eternal “spirits” contained within physical bodies, and although our physical bodies will certainly die and returned to the “dust”, our spiritual bodies will go on forever. Jesus Christ was sent into the world to die for the sins of every person so we may live in our eternal spiritual bodies with God forever. However, if we refuse and reject Jesus as our personal “Savior and Lord” we will remain unforgiven for our sins and live eternally separated from Him. (See Mark 16:16; John 3:18, 36; 1 John 5:10) God loves people, and because they live forever, He made the way through His Son Jesus for us to spend eternity with Him where we shall give Him “praise” and declare His “truth” forever and ever.
Next time David asks, “Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
