Who Has Woe and Sorrow? - Proverbs 23:29

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “my son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit. She also lies in wait as for a prey, and increases transgressors among men, and in chapter twenty-three and verse twenty-nine of Proverbs Solomon asked, “Who has woe? Who has sorrow?” where we read,

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions?

Who has babbling? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?

The verse begins, “Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Solomon began with the words, “Who has woe” or “what person whether male or female holds, owns or possesses grief or despair”? “Who has sorrow?” which means “what person whether male or female holds, owns or possesses an exclamation of pain”? “Who has contentions?”or “what person whether male or female holds, owns or possesses strife or brawling”? Solomon questioned what person possesses grief, pain and strife.

The verse goes on to say, “Who has babbling? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes?” Solomon continued with the words, “who has babbling?” or “what person whether male or female holds, owns or possesses meditation, complaint, musing and communication”? “Who has wounds without cause?” which means “what person whether male or female holds, owns or possesses bruises freely, for nothing, in vain and for no purpose”? “Who has redness of eyes?” or “what person whether male or female holds, owns or possesses dullness or blurring within their physical eyes”? Solomon also asked what person possess complaining, obtains bruises for no purpose and blurry vision.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon some of the effects a person experiences when they abuse alcoholic beverages. “Woe, sorrow, contentions, babbling, wounds without cause and redness of eyes” all accompany the person who over-indulges in wine and strong drink. God's idea is to protect us from elements that He knows are destructive to us, and because we all have partaken of things that are destructive to us, He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the power to resist the incriminating elements that will cause us to come to ruin and destruction.

Next time Solomon answers his questions with the statement, “they that tarry long at the wine”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
