A Wise Child Versus a Foolish King - Ecclesiastes 4:13

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon asked, “if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken, and in chapter four and verse thirteen of his book Solomon said, “better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king”, where we read,

Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

The verse reads, Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, … Solomon began with the words, “better is a poor” or “more pleasant, agreeable and excellent exists an indigent and impoverished ” “and a wise child” which means “and a skillful, shrewd, crafty, learned and cunning youth” “than an old” or “compared to an aged and elderly” “and foolish king” which means “and stupid, simpleton, dullard and arrogant royal ruler and leader”. Solomon said a peasant youth who is shrewd and skillful is superior to a stupid and arrogant royal ruler.

The verse goes on to say, “… who will no more be admonished.” Solomon continued with the words, “who will no more” or “that shall in no way or manner any longer” “be admonished” which means “be taught or warned”. Solomon added that the “foolish king” will no longer listen to teachings or warnings.

When we consider Solomon’s words in this verse, we see how he said a peasant youth who conducts themselves with shrewdness and skill is superior to an arrogant and stupid royal ruler who will no longer be taught or warned. We should all take note of these traits. God gives wisdom, and pride, arrogance and stupidity usually accompany the person who fails to realize that God is the source of their possessions and positions. God loves everyone, and He proved His love when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and raised Him from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him, we will be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His Holy Spirit who will make us wise, teachable and productive in His Kingdom rather than being “foolish, arrogant and too stubborn to learn”.

Next time Solomon says, “out of prison he comes to reign”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
