In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savor: so does a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honor”, and in chapter ten and verse two of his book Solomon said, “a wise man’s heart is at his right hand” where we read,
A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left.
The verse reads, “A wise man's heart is at his right hand;” Solomon began with the words, “a wise man’s heart” or “the soul, mind and will belonging to a skilled, shrewd and prudent person” “is at his right hand” which means “exists in the direction of his right hand”. Solomon said a person who has a soul, mind and will that is shrewd and prudent follows the “right” or correct direction.
The verse continues, “but a fool's heart at his left.” Solomon added the words, “but a fool’s heart” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the soul, mind and will of a dullard, simpleton and stupid fellow” “is at his left” which means “exist in the direction of their left hand”. Solomon said a person who has a soul, mind and will that is as a dullard, simpleton and stupid fellow takes the “left” or wrong direction.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how he compared the person who has a shrewd and prudent soul and mind to the person who has a simpleton soul and mind. The difference is the direction they take. The “wise” person chooses the correct way, and the “foolish” person chooses the wrong way. God wants us to be wise, and He offers His “wisdom” to all who ask Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. When we put our faith and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us the “wisdom” of His Holy Spirit who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live in His “wise” ways. (See John 16:13; James 1:5)
Next time Solomon shares about, “when he that is a fool walks by the way”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
