If the Spirit of the Ruler Rises Up - Ecclesiastes 10:4

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left. Yes also, when he that is a fool walks by the way, his wisdom fails him, and he says to every one that he is a fool”, and in chapter ten and verse four of his book Solomon shared what to do, “if the spirit of the ruler rise up against you” where we read,

If the spirit of the ruler rise up against you, leave not your place;

for yielding pacifies great offenses.

The verse reads, “If the spirit of the ruler rise up against you, leave not your place;” Solomon began with the words, “if the spirit of the ruler” or “whether and in case the soul, mind and will belonging to the royal ruler and leader” “rises up against you” which means “grow, ascend and shoot forth in opposition to you, Solomon’s readers”, “leave not your place” or “do not depart or proceed away from your, Solomon’s readers’, station, land, region or location”. Solomon instructed his readers not to depart from their location at the time the soul and mind of the royal ruler or authority ascends in opposition to them.

The verse continues, “for yielding pacifies great offenses.” Solomon added the words, “for yielding” or “because, since and on account that health, profit and placidity” “pacifies great offenses” which means “rests, settles and quiets numerous and an abundant amount of sin, punishment and guilt”. Solomon told his readers that conciliation or a quiet spirit settles and overcomes numerous mistakes and wrongs.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how we are to be when we are under the authority of someone. A king, government ruler or authority or even a boss might ascend in opposition to us, and when we continue with a quiet spirit before them, many times the “offenses” are reconciled. God wants us to use wisdom while we are under the authority of others, and because He is the ultimate authority and all people will give an account to Him, (See Romans 14:12) we should humble ourselves, repent of our sins and receive His Son Jesus as our “Savior and Lord” who came into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. He rose from the grave after three days, and when we put our faith and trust in Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His Holy Spirit to us who will guide us into all truth and empower us to live according to that truth while we are under the authority of those He chooses to have rule in our lives.

Next time Solomon shares about, “an error which proceeds from the ruler”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
