The Slow Sentence of an Evil Work - Ecclesiastes 8:11

In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon said, “I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity”, and in chapter eight and verse eleven of his book Solomon shared about the, “sentence against an evil work” where we read,

Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily,

therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

The verse reads, “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, …” Solomon began with the words, “because sentence” or “since and on account that edict, decree and command “against an evil work” which means “in opposition to a bad, disagreeable, malignant, displeasing and wicked act, deed, business or pursuit” “is not executed speedily” or “is in no way or manner fashioned, accomplished, made or produced in haste, promptly and quickly”. Solomon shared since a decree in opposition to a wicked act does not happen quickly, the following occurs.

The verse continues, “… therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” Solomon added the words, “therefore the heart” or “wherefore, then and on this account the soul, mind and will” “of the sons of men” which means “pertaining to the progeny and offspring belonging to human beings both male and female” “is fully set in them” or “exists as abundant, armed and satisfied within the people” “to do evil” which means “to perform, accomplish and produce bad, malignancy, displeasure, wickedness and that which is disagreeable”. Solomon said because judgment does not happen quickly, people who are wicked have their souls and minds armed and satisfied to continue performing wicked acts and deeds.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn how Solomon said because people who commit wicked acts do not suffer consequences quickly, they continue to commit them. God is a merciful and gracious God who is able to forgive the sins of everyone and promises us everlasting life when we submit to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead after three days. Rather than continuing to commit wicked acts, let all who read these words humble themselves, repent of their sins and turn away from wickedness especially when retribution for sins has not quickly occurred.

Next time Solomon shares what happens, “though a sinner do evil an hundred times”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
