The Fear of the LORD Hates Evil - Proverbs 8:13

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions”, and in chapter eight and verse thirteen of Proverbs Solomon said, “the fear of the LORD is to hate evil” where we read,

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil:

pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

The verse begins, “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: Solomon began with the words, “the fear of the LORD” or “the terror, respect, reverence and piety belonging to Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” is to hate evil which means “exists as being odious and an enemy and foe to bad, disagreeable, malignant and displeasing unhappiness”. Solomon said the reverence and awe of Jehovah God is demonstrated by a person being odious to and as an enemy to bad, malignancy and wickedness.

The verse goes on to say, “pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Solomon continued with the words, “pride, and arrogance” or “arrogance and swelling excellency, majesty or pomp”, “and the evil way” which means “as well as the bad, unpleasant, displeasing, unhappy and miserable road, path, journey, direction, manner and habit”, “and the froward mouth” or “and the perverse and fraudulent orifice in the face used for eating, drinking and speaking”, “do I hate” which means “does wisdom consider odious and as an enemy or foe”. Solomon said majesty and pomp as well as the bad, unpleasant and miserable direction and manner are odious to “wisdom”.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon the first step for obtaining the “wisdom” of God. Anyone who desires to have a personal relationship with Him must revere Him, and “hate” what He hates. “Pride, arrogance, the evil way and a fraudulent mouth” are all odious to God, and we must put them aside if we want to relate to Him. God loves us, and He is for us. He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and extend to us His “wisdom” as we hold Him in awe and “hate” the things that He hates.

Next time Solomon says, “counsel is mine, and sound wisdom”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
