Answering a Matter Before Hearing It - Proverbs 18:13

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility”, and in chapter eighteen and verse thirteen of Proverbs Solomon shared about the person, “that answers a matter before he hears it” where we read,

He that answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame unto him.

The verse begins, “He that answers a matter before he hears it, ...Solomon began with the words, “he that answers a matter” or “the person whether male or female who responds, returns or replies back concerning a case, act, business or utterance” “before he hears it” which means “in advance and prior to listening, paying attention to and understanding the matter” possesses the following. Solomon said the following would happen to the person who responds to a speech or act in advance of paying attention to or understanding it.

The verse continues, “... it is folly and shame unto him.” Solomon added the words, “it is folly” or “the response of the person who didn't listen or pay attention to a matter exists as foolishness and silliness” “and shame” which means “and disgrace, reproach, confusion, dishonor, insult and ignominy” “unto him” or “to the person who responds without listening and understanding”. Solomon said the response of the person before understanding a matter becomes foolishness, insult and confusion to him.

When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon that we should listen carefully to a speech or concern of a person before we reply to them because if we don't, our response will become foolishness and silliness to us. God wants us to be wise, and He offers His wisdom to every person who will yield to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind, and when we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and produce in us a carefulness to hear others when they speak and to hold back our “answers” until we are fully aware of what they are saying.

Next time Solomon says, “the spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
