Haughty Before Destruction - Proverbs 18:12

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “the rich man's wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit”, and in chapter eighteen and verse twelve of Proverbs Solomon said, “before destruction the heart of man is haughty” where we read,

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.

The verse begins, “Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, ...Solomon began with the words, “before destruction” or “in advance and prior to breaking, fracture, crushing, ruin and shattering” “the heart of man” which means “the soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections belonging to a person whether male or female” “is haughty” or “exists as lofty, arrogant and boastful”. Solomon said in advance of the ruin and devastation that comes to a person is a soul, mind and will that is boastful and proud.

The verse goes on to say, “... and before honor is humility.” Solomon continued with the words, “and before honor” or “and in advance, prior to and within the face or front of glory, abundance, splendor, dignity, reputation and reverence” “is humility” which means “exists clemency, meekness and gentleness”. Solomon said prior to a person being exalted with glory and splendor, there must exist condescension and modesty.

When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Solomon how ruin and devastation enters into a person's life when they are arrogant and boastful, and when a person is “humble and meek”, they are “honored” and glorified among others. God's Son Jesus lived this way when He humbled Himself to become like us, (See Philippians 2:8) be tempted like us and to die like we shall. His death on behalf of the sins of all mankind gave us access to being forgiven for our sins, granted everlasting life and taught not to be boastful but humble like Him so we may be glorified by Him someday.

Next time Solomon shares about the person, “that answers a matter before he hears it”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
