In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Eat you not the bread of him that has an evil eye, neither desire you his dainty meats”, and in chapter twenty-three and verse seven of Proverbs Solomon said, “as he thinks in his heart, so is he” where we read,
For as he thinks in his heart, so is he:
Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you.
The verse begins, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he:” Solomon began with the words, “for as he thinks” or “because, since and on account that similar and in likeness to the way the person with the evil eye calculates, reckons and estimates” “in his heart” which means “within the evil person's soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections”, “so is he” or “even and indeed exists the person”. Solomon shared how the existence of a person with an “evil eye” is revealed by how they reckon and calculate.
The verse goes on to say, “Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you.” Solomon continued with the words, “eat and drink” or “consume and devour”, “says he to you” which means “utters, declares and proclaims the person with the evil eye toward you”; “but his heart” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover the person with the evil eye's soul, mind, will, desires, living being, conscience and seat of emotions and affections” “is not with you” which means “exists in no way alongside you”. Solomon shared how the person with the “evil eye” would tell his readers and listeners to consume and devour his food, however, his soul, mind and will were in no way alongside of them.
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon about the deception of the person with an “evil eye”. Although they have food and offerings to provide and they seem to be cordial, their intentions are not good. God wants us to have a personal relationship with Him through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, and when we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and equip us with the wisdom to not be deceived by by the food and drink offered by people with an “evil eye” and soul.
Next time Solomon says, “the morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
