Vomiting Up a Morsel - Proverbs 23:8

In the book of Proverbs Solomon said, “Eat you not the bread of him that has an evil eye, neither desire you his dainty meats. For as he thinks in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you, and in chapter twenty-three and verse eight of Proverbs Solomon said, “the morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up” where we read,

The morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up,

and lose your sweet words.

The verse begins, “The morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up, ... Solomon began with the words, “the morsel” or “the fragment, bit or piece of bread or food” “which you have eaten” which means “that you, the readers and listeners of Solomon's words, consumed and devoured” “shall you vomit up” or “will you, readers and listeners of Solomon's words, spew out, disgorge and bring up again”. Solomon said the bit of food provided by the person with the “evil eye” which was eaten by his readers and listeners would be spewed out.

The verse continues, “... and lose your sweet words.” Solomon added the words, “and lose” or “and destroy, corrupt, ruin and decay” “your sweet words” which means “your, the readers and listeners of Solomon's, pleasant, delightful, lovely and agreeable utterances, declarations and proclamations”. Solomon said when his readers and listeners “vomit up” the “morsel” offered by the person with the “evil eye”, his readers and listeners would have their delightful utterances destroyed.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Solomon how the food provided by the person with an “evil eye” and eaten by his readers and listeners would not only be spewed out, but would also cause them to have their delightful speech ruined. In other words, the complements about the person with the “evil eye” spoken by his readers and listeners would be wasted. God loves us, and His warnings are to protect us. He knew we have sin in our lives that leads to death, (See Romans 3:23; 6:23) so He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide His wisdom when encountering people with an “evil eye” and the destruction they bring with their offerings.

Next time Solomon says, “speak not in the ears of a fool”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
