In the book of Song of Songs we have one of the greatest love stories depicted within the Holy Scriptures. This Song, written by Solomon the son of David, was considered to be the crowning poem or songs of all the one thousand and five songs written by Solomon. (See 1 Kings 4:32)
The Song of Songs is the fifth book of Hebrew poetry within the Scriptures which is proceeded by Job, Psalms, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Hebrew poetry is known for repetition or contrast of ideas rather than the rhyme and rhythm method that is employed in most English poetry. We shall see many of these Hebrew practices as we make our way through the book.
The Song of Songs is interpreted in various ways. Among them is that it is simply a love story in opera form and was to be enjoyed by the people of Israel. It is possible that this was the story of Solomon's pursuit of one of the Hebrew women to be his bride, and it was also considered to be a guide for marriage and the intimate relationship within a Jewish spousal relationship. It was also considered to be a picture of Jehovah God's relationship with the nation of Israel because Israel is often considered to be the bride of God, and His passion for them is depicted within the words. The Song of Songs also becomes a beautiful picture of Jesus' love for His church who is considered His bride, and when we consider all the communications and ideas within this book, we see how much He cares for those who join His church by receiving Him as their personal “Savior and Lord”.
Overall this Song of Song shows us how much God loves us, cares for us and desires an intimate personal relationship with us thru His Son Jesus who died on the cross for our sins, and regardless of our past, our personal view of ourselves and what others think of us, God loves us. May we remember Jesus' words as we study this book: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life”. (See John 3:16) Let us humble ourselves, bow before the feet of Jesus and receive His blessing and love through this “Song of Songs” written by Solomon and inspired by our Holy Almighty God.
Next time we begin with the first verse of Song of Songs where Solomon says, “the Song of Songs, which is Solomon's”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
