Lift Up Your Eyes and See - Zechariah 5:5

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “then I turned, and lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. And he said unto me, What do you see? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits. Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that steals shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that swears shall be cut off as on that side according to it. I will bring it forth, says the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof”, and in chapter five and verse five of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how the angel said, “lift up now your eyes, and see” where we read,

Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me,

Lift up now your eyes, and see what is this that goes forth.

The verse reads, “Then the angel that talked with me went forth, and said unto me, ... Zechariah began with the words, “then the angel” or “at that time the spiritual envoy or messenger” “that talked with me” which means “who spoke, made declarations and proclamations with me, Zechariah” “went forth” or “departed, left, exited and proceeded”, “and said unto me” which means “and uttered, declared and proclaimed to me, Zechariah” the following words. Zechariah shared how the spiritual messenger proceeded and uttered to him the following words.

The verse goes on to say, “... Lift up now your eyes, and see what is this that goes forth. Zechariah continued with the words, “lift up now your eyes” or “exalt and raise at this time and moment your, Zechariah's, physical eyes used for vision”, “and see what is this” which means “and discern, distinguish, perceive and observe whatsoever this is” “that goes forth” or “that enters or is coming”. Zechariah shared how the angel directed him to raise his physical eyes and see what is coming.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how the angel drew his attention to what was about to arrive before him. We shall learn what that is in our next verses, but for now, let us be reminded that Zechariah has been shown many facets of this vision which all point to the physical and spiritual rescue of Israel. God loves the people of Israel, and even though they forsook Him, lived in captivity in Babylon for seventy years, came back to begin the rebuilding of His temple and stopped working on it, God continued to call them back to a relationship with Him. God loves all people, and even if we have forsaken Him and His ways like the people of Israel, He continues to invite us to receive His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and teach us the value of looking to His His Holy Spirit for guidance and direction.

Next time Zechariah shares how the angel says, “this is an ephah that goes forth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
