The Curse that Goes Forth - Zechariah 5:3

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “then I turned, and lifted up my eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll. And he said unto me, What do you see? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits”, and in chapter five and verse three of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how the angel said, “this is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth” where we read,

Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that steals shall be cut off as on this side according to it; and every one that swears shall be cut off as on that side according to it..

The verse reads, Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth: Zechariahbegan with the words, “then said he unto me” or “at that time uttered, declared and proclaimed he, the angel, to me, Zechariah”, “this is the curse” which means “this, the flying roll, exists as the execration, oath and swearing” “that goes forth” or “that proceeds, advances and departs” “over the face” which means “on behalf of, according to and concerning the presence or surface” “of the whole earth” or “pertaining to the entire and total country, region, district and world”. Zechariah shared how the angel told him the “flying roll” existed as the execration and oath that proceeds throughout the surface of the entire world.

The verse continues, “for every one that steals shall be cut off as on this side according to it; Zechariah added the words, “for every one that steals” or “because, since and on account that each, the whole and all people who are thieves” “shall be cut off” which means “will exist as banished and expelled” “as on this side” or “on one side of the scroll” “according to it” which means “in keeping with the writing on the scroll”. Zechariah shared how every person who is a thief would be banished from the country in keeping with the writing on one side the “flying scroll”.

When we consider Zechariah's words in this verse, we learn how the angel told him the significance of the “flying roll”. The writing on the “scroll” was an oath that proceeded throughout the world and was on behalf of thieves who would be banished and expelled because of it. God knows the thoughts and intents of every person (See Hebrews 4:12), and because we have sin in our lives which leads to death, God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and help keep us away from behaviors which are in violation to His law and lead us to being banished from Him.

Next time Zechariah shares how Jehovah God says, “I will bring it forth”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
