The Hands of Zerubbabel - Zechariah 4:9

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying ..., and in chapter four and verse nine of Zechariah, Zechariah shared how Jehovah God said, “the hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house” where we read,

The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house;

his hands shall also finish it; and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.

The verse reads, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; Zechariah began with the words, “the hands of Zerubbabel” or “the physical hands belonging to Zerubbabel whose name means sown in Babylon and was the grandson of king Jehoiachin and leader of the first group of returning exiles from Babylon” “have laid the foundation” which means “fixed, established and ordained the base and fundamental structure” “of this house” or “belonging to this dwelling place, habitation and abode”. Zechariah shared how Jehovah God noted that “Zerubbabel” established the base structure of God's temple in Jerusalem.

The verse goes on to say, “his hands shall also finish it; and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.Zechariah continued with the words, “his hands” or “his, Zerubbabel's physical hands” “shall also finish it” which means “will even so and indeed complete Jehovah God's house”; “and you shall know” or “and you, the people of Israel, will perceive, discern, distinguish and understand” “that the LORD of hosts” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God who is over the spiritual army of angels and warriors” “has sent me to you” or “has dispatched and assigned me, the angel, to you, Zechariah and the people of Israel”. Zechariah shared how “Zerubbabel's physical hands” would also complete the house of Jehovah God, and this would cause the people of Israel to be aware that the angel was dispatched to Zechariah.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how Jehovah God was to employ the physical hands of “Zerubbabel” not only to begin the rebuilding of His temple in Jerusalem, but also to complete it. This would prove to the people of Israel that the “angel” was sent to Zechariah by Jehovah God. God's desire was for the people of Israel to know He was among them and desired to restore them after being captives in Babylon for seventy years, and when the “temple” was rebuilt, they would know His presence again. God wants to be in our lives as well, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we surrender our lives to Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and not only begin the salvation of our lives but also complete it until were go to live in Heaven with Him. (See Philippians 1:6)

Next time Zechariah shares how Jehovah God asks, “who has despised the day of small things?”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
