The LORD's Plague to Smite the People - Zechariah 14:12

In the book of Zechariah, Zechariah said “And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one. All the land shall be turned as a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem:and it shall be lifted, up, and inhabited in her place, from Benjamin's gate unto the place of the first gate, unto the corner gate, and from the tower of Hananeel unto the king's wine. And men shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more utter destruction; but Jerusalem shall be safely inhabited”, and in chapter fourteen and verse twelve of Zechariah, Zechariah said, “this shall be a plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem” where we read,

And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD shall smite all the people

that have fought against Jerusalem; their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet,

and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

The verse reads, And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD shall smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Zechariah began with the words, “and this shall be the plague” or “and the following will exist as the blow, slaughter, pestilence and fatal strike” “wherewith the LORD” which means “that Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God” “shall smite all the people that have fought” or “will strike, each, every, the whole and everyone of the human beings both male and female who have waged war” “against Jerusalem” which means “in opposition to Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Zechariah shared how there will exist pestilence and slaughter with which Jehovah God will strike everyone who has made war with “Jerusalem”.

The verse goes on to say, their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, ... Zechariah continued with the words, “their flesh” or “the bodies of the people who have fought against Jerusalem” “shall consume away” which means “will pine, fester, moulder and rot away” “while they stand upon their feet” or “during the time they, the people who have fought against Jerusalem, remain upright, stand still and continue on their physical feet”. Zechariah shared how the “plague” dispatched by Jehovah God will cause the bodies of the people who opposed Jerusalem to pine and rot away as they remain upright on their physical feet.

Finally the verse says, “... and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.” Zechariah concluded this verse with the words, “and their eyes” or “and the physical eyes of the people who have fought against Jerusalem” “shall consume away” which means “will pine, fester, moulder and rot away” “in their holes” or “within the sockets of the people who opposed Jerusalem”, “and their tongue” which means “and the wedge in their mouths used for tasting and speaking” “shall consume away” or “will pine, fester, moulder and rot away” “in their mouth” which means “within the orifice in the faces used for eating, drinking and speaking”. Zechariah ended this verse by sharing how both they “eyes” and the “tongues” of the people who opposed Jerusalem will moulder and rot away.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we learn through Zechariah how massive physical destruction will be caused by the pestilence and fatal strike that is allowed by Jehovah God. Some believe these horrific events to be the effects of a nuclear weapon, but regardless of what it is, it is not God's first desire. God's desire is to save everybody, and He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and provide for and protect us all our lives. If we refuse to receive Him as our “Savior and Lord”, we are subject not only to oppose “Jerusalem”, but also to fight against Jehovah God and His Son Jesus which will subject us to the “plagues” dispatched by God.

Next time Zechariah says, “a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
