In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel. So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days”, and in chapter two and verse twelve of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “I arose in the night”, where we read,
And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.
The verse reads, “And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem:”. Nehemiah began with the words, “and I arose in the night” or “and I, Nehemiah, stood, rose and raised up within the nighttime hours”, “I and some few men with me” which means “I, Nehemiah, and a small number of male human beings alongside and accompanying me, Nehemiah”; “neither told I any man” or “no and not in any way did I, Nehemiah, make known, conspicuous or inform another male person” “what my God had put in my heart”which means “whatsoever my, Nehemiah's, Supreme Deity, set, fixed, established and entrusted within my, Nehemiah's, inner man, mind, will, understanding and seat of emotions and affections” “to do at Jerusalem” or “to perform and produce at Jerusalem whose name means teaching of peace and is the chief city of Palestine and capital of the united kingdom and the nation of Judah after the split”. Nehemiah shared how he got up in the nighttime along with a small number of “men” accompanying him, and he did not disclose to any person what Jehovah God set within his inner man and soul to perform.
The verse continues, “neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.” Nehemiah added the words, “neither was there any beast” or “no and not in any way existed there, a single cattle, animal or livestock” “with me”which means “alongside and accompanying me, Nehemiah”, “save the beast that I rode upon” or “except for the animal that I, Nehemiah, sat on or mounted. Nehemiah shared how there was no other animal accompanying him except for the one he was riding upon.
When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how he rose in the nighttime along with a small number of other men, however, he did not disclose to any other person what God put within his soul to perform. He thought it was important to let his readers know that he was not accompanied by animals other than the one he mounted, and while his mission was underway, He continued to employ wisdom in his actions. God was using Nehemiah to accomplish His will, and He will do the same for everyone who surrenders their life to His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind and was raised from the dead three days later. When we believe and trust in Him as our “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and give us His Holy Spirit to guide and empower us to fulfill His will and purpose for our lives.
Next time Nehemiah says, “I went out by night by the gate of the valley” so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
