In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah returned to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. He used, “Eliashib and his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. And next unto him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri. But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana. And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord. Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, unto the throne of the governor on this side the river. Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall, And next unto them repaired Rephaiah the son of Hur, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem”, and in chapter three and verse ten of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “next unto them repaired Jedaiah”, where we read,
And next unto them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even over against his house.
And next unto him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah.
The verse reads, “And next unto them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even over against his house.” Nehemiah began with the words, “and next unto them” or “and beside or in close proximity to Hananaiah and Rephaiah” “repaired Jedaiah” which means “strengthened, hardened and made firm Jedaiah whose name means praised of Jehovah” “the son of Harumaph” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Harumaph whose name means split nose”, “even over against his house” which means “across from his habitation, abode and dwelling place”. Nehemiah shared how “Jedaiah” restored and rebuilt the barrier wall across from his dwelling place.
The verse continues, “And next unto him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah.” Nehemiah added the words, “and next unto him” or “and beside and in close proximity to Jedaiah” “repaired Hattush” which means “strengthened, hardened and made firm Hattush whose name means assembled” “the son of Hashabniah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Hashabniah whose name means whom Jehovah regards”. Nehemiah shared how “Hattush” repaired the barrier wall beside “Jedaiah”.
When we think through the words in this verse, we discover through Nehemiah another two men who worked on the barrier wall that surrounded Jerusalem. “Jedaiah and Hattush” were among those who restored the wall, and they worked beside one another and in unison. God was working out His plan through these men, and He desires to employ us in His Kingdom work as well. When He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind and resurrected Him from the dead three days later, He made the way for us to be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and employed according to His perfect will and in keeping with the ability and wisdom He places within us.
Next time Nehemiah shares about, “Malchijah the son of Harim”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
