In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem and began to rebuild the wall. He used, “Eliashib and his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. And next unto him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri. But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana. And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord. Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, unto the throne of the governor on this side the river. Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall, And next unto them repaired Rephaiah the son of Hur, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem. And next unto them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even over against his house. And next unto him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah”, and in chapter three and verse eleven of Nehemiah, Nehemiah shared about, “Malchijah the son of Harim”, where we read,
Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hashub the son of Pahathmoab,
repaired the other piece, and the tower of the furnaces.
The verse reads, “Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hashub the son of Pahathmoab,” Nehemiah began with the word, “Malchijah” or “my king is Jehovah” “the son of Harim” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Harim whose name means dedicated”, “and Hashub” or “and Hashub whose name means considerate” “the son of Pahathmoab” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Pahathmoab whose name means pit of Moab”. Nehemiah shared how “Malchijah and Hashub” performed the following.
The verse goes on to say, “repaired the other piece, and the tower of the furnaces.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “repaired the other piece” or “strengthened, hardened and made firm the second or another measure or portion”, “and the tower” which means “and the elevated stage or pulpit” “of the furnaces” or “belonging to the ovens, stoves or fire-pots for cooking”. Nehemiah shared how “Malchijah and Hashub” strengthened another portion of the wall of Jerusalem as well as the elevated stage and fire-pots in that section.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah about another two men who were involved with the rebuilding of the wall that surrounded Jerusalem. “Malchijah and Hashub” worked on the section of the wall which not only had an elevated stage, but also had the ovens or fire-pots for cooking. Each section of the wall was important for the protection of the people of Israel, and because God loves them, He orchestrated and put together all these people to be effective in the work. God loves us as well, and when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross and to be raised from the dead three days later, He gave access to Him so we may be forgiven of our sins, granted everlasting life and equipped with His presence and wisdom while He uses us in His Kingdom work.
Next time Nehemiah says, “next unto him repaired Shallum”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
