Meremoth the Son of Urijah - Nehemiah 3:4

In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem to rebuild it, “then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. And next unto him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri. But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof”and in chapter three and verse four of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah”, where we read,

And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana.

The verse reads, And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz.. Nehemiah began with the words, “and next unto them” or “and beside or in close proximity to the sons of Hassenaah” “repaired Meremoth” which means “prevailed, hardened, made firm and resolute Meremoth whose name means elevations”, “the son of Urijah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Urijah whose name means Jehovah or Yahweh is my light flame”, “the son of Koz” which means “the male progeny or offspring of Koz whose name means thorn”. Nehemiah shared how “Meremoth” whose name means “elevations” was rebuilding the wall in close proximity to the “sons of Hassenaah”.

The verse continues, And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana.” Nehemiah added the words, “and next unto them” or “and beside or in close proximity to Meremoth” “repaired Meshullam” which means “prevailed, hardened, made firm and resolute Meshullan whose name means friend” “the son of Berechiah” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Berechiah whose name means Jehovah blesses”, “the son of Meshezabeel” which means “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Meshezabeel whose name means God delivers”. “And next unto them” or “and beside or in close proximity to the sons of Meshezabeel” “repaired Zadoc” which means “prevailed, hardened, made firm and resolute Zadoc whose name means righteous” “the son of Baana” or “the male offspring and progeny belonging to Baana whose name means in the affliction”. Nehemiah said “Meshullam and Zadok” rebuilt the wall in close proximity to “Meremoth”.

When we think through the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how one by one these men and their people were rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem. This effort took many people to accomplish it, but each one doing their part was helping to rebuild it all. God wants us to be a part of the building of His Kingdom, and we begin our journey by receiving His Son Jesus who was crucified on the cross and resurrected three days later for the sins of the world. When we yield to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and use us in His Kingdom work in proximity to others to fulfill His desire, purpose and will.

Next time Nehemiah says, “next unto them the Tekoites repaired”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
