In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah went back to the city of Jerusalem to rebuild it, “then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. And next unto him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri. But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana”, and in chapter three and verse five of Nehemiah, Nehemiah said, “next unto them the Tekoites repaired”, where we read,
And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord.
The verse reads, “And next unto them the Tekoites repaired;”. Nehemiah began with the words, “and next unto them” or “and beside or in close proximity to Meremoth, Meshullam and Zadok” “the Tekoites” whose name means “trumpet blast” “repaired” or “prevailed, hardened, made firm and resolute”. Nehemiah shared how the “Tekoites” made firm and resolute the wall beside the people of “Meremoth, Meshullam and Zadok”.
The verse goes on to say, “but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord.” Nehemiah continued with the words, “but their nobles” or “however, nonetheless, notwithstanding and moreover their, the Tekoites' majestic ones, chieftains, principal, worthy and famous ones” “put not their necks” which means “did not enumerate, lead in or cause to bring near their, the nobles of the Tekoites', physical backs of the neck” “to the work of their Lord” or “toward the belonging to their, the Tekoites', firm, strong and sovereign master”. Nehemiah shared how the aristocrats or famous members of the “Tekoites” did not bring the physical “back of their necks” toward the labor and service belonging to their sovereign master.
When we consider the words in this verse, we learn through Nehemiah how more people were getting involved in the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem. “The Tekoites” made some repairs, however, their aristocrats and famous people did not get involved. God wants everyone to be involved in His Kingdom because every person in the world needs to be saved from their sins. When we surrender our lives to His Son Jesus who died on the cross and was raised from the dead three days later on behalf of the sins of the world, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and put within us a passion and ability to be involved in His work as long as we are not resistant to do so.
Next time Nehemiah says, “the old gate repaired Jehoiada”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
Until tomorrow…there is more…
