Micah the prophet addressed
those who lived in Samaria and Jerusalem who planned evil and carried
out their wicked deeds. These pernicious people conspired to steal
houses and lands from their neighbors, and while they may have
thought they prospered, the LORD was watching and reciprocated their
wickedness upon them. This caused them to sing a “doleful
lamentation” which included lyrics such as “utterly
spoiled”, changing the “portion of my people”,
“removed it from me” and “dividing our fields”.
In chapter two and verse five, Micah draws yet another conclusion
concerning the result of their reciprocated judgment where we read:
Therefore you shalt
have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the
LORD.
The
verse begins, “Therefore you shall have none that shall
cast a cord by lot...” Micah
wrote, “Therefore you shall have none that shall cast”
which means “to throw, cast, hurl or fling” “a cord”
or “rope, territory, band, company, or measuring cord or line”
“by lot” which literally means “a pebble or rock”. The
idea is that there would be no one who would be able to measure out
any possession of land among them.
The
verse goes on to say, “...in the congregation of the
LORD.” Micah spoke
specifically of those “in the congregation”
or “assembly, company or convocation” “of the LORD”
or within “the portion of Jehovah's people.” Because of
their wicked plans and ways the people forfeited that which should
have been rightfully theirs because they belonged to Jehovah God.
When we think about these
words of Micah, we might think it a shame that they lost what they
could have easily kept and gained. It is as though the Lord God
through the prophet is lamenting their horrible state as He tells
them what they have lost. The Lord God Almighty allowed this
destruction to fall upon them because they forsook Him in their evil
ways. While we meditate upon these things, let the Lord show us any
area whereby we too would be subject to judgment such as having no
one to “cast a cord” for us as we dwell among that which
belongs to Him.
Next
time Micah writes about not prophesying,
so read ahead, and we
shall join together then.
Until
tomorrow…there is more…
